I wrote this at about 5AM after I couldn’t sleep; my usual insomnia. My wife liked it so much that she immediately took it upon herself to make it into a comic with her beautiful artwork - and yes, she’s the one that suggested the saturation change - a perfect transition. It’s only 8 pages, but it expresses exactly what I wanted.
For those that are confused about the plot (Spoilers Beyond Here):
In summation, they met when Mary was moving in and shared a few laughs, and afterwards she came back to see him/thank him for his help with moving in, but found him dead. Page 2 Panel 3 and Page 7 Panel 1 are direct turn-arounds of each other, as I wrote out in the comic script, which gives you the most direct imagery of what transpired in the story.
I didn’t want to extend it with lengthy explanations or tell people how to interpret it - You can interpret it as creepy, sad, romantic, etc. The most I wanted was to tell a story that was stuck in my head (like so many are) and to remind people to take chances. Would the character in this comic still be alive if he had confronted the girl and asked her out? Perhaps. At the very least, he would have had the satisfaction of knowing her answer, instead of waiting until it was too late.
Life is too short, but sometimes love is forever.
